After the all-embracing Volume ‘zero’ (a selection of the entire period 1975-2020) and the subsequent six volumes (1975-1980; 1981-1985; 1986-1990, 1991-1995, 1996-2000 and 2001-2005), this Volume VII includes a total of 389 drawings taken from 52 sketchbooks.

From 2006 on, a key objective of the newly organised Foster + Partners was to release Norman Foster himself from responsibility for the detailed management of the practice so that he could concentrate more on design. This also helped further his public presence and participation in debates on the future of architecture and, above all, of cities; it also allowed him to expand the important ambassadorial role that he plays, a high degree of political involvement, and a huge amount of travel for client presentations and meetings.

As in the previous volumes, the structure is thematic, with the usual first part on architecture, arranged by individual projects, and an additional section devoted to further schemes scarcely developed in the sketchbooks. There is also room for the professional practice section, linked to the one on furniture and objects, and a unique subsection dedicated to the Net Jets aircraft; the traditional miscellanea closes the volume.

The Norman Foster Sketchbooks series is a book series celebrating Foster’s career from the 1970s to the present day, through his personal sketchbooks. It is a compilation of several volumes that follow the work of Norman Foster in chronological sequence, organised in five-year periods.
